FAQ

  • This looks like fun! How can I join?

We're always on the lookout for new members! We split our year into two semesters: Fall (September through January) and Winter/Spring (February through June), and we recruit towards the beginning of those terms. If you would like to join us, get in touch!

  • Where and when do you rehearse?

We now rehearse Sunday afternoons, from 1:30-3:30pm at MotherWit Doula Care. Rehearsals are masked since we are indoors and breathing all over each other.

  • Where can I see you perform?

We perform a string of gigs at the end of each of our semesters (January and June), and we always post the dates on our Upcoming Events page (i swear this will be a page by the time we have any upcoming events!)

  • Is there a membership fee?

Yes. Members pay $300 for the entire year (September through June), or $175 per semester. This contributes to paying our overhead, including the outstanding musicians who accompany our live concerts.

  • WOW, that is expensive. I love to sing, but I cannot afford that!

I totally get it. If the value is your issue, let me just break it down - it’s less than $8 per hour. $15 per 2-hour rehearsal, which is actually very cheap when you think about it. That being said, as someone who has lived in low-income situations, I am willing to negotiate a lower price for members who simply can’t afford the fee. I also love to barter, and have done so in the past. Please come to me with your concerns if you find membership prohibitively expensive.

  • Where do you get your arrangements?

Our arrangements are put together with love by our director Dee and guitarist Jake. They are not commercially available as we do not own the rights to these tunes.

  • Do I need to read sheet music to join?

Absolutely not. However, we do use sheet music of our proprietary arrangements to facilitate rehearsals. If you have zero experience with sheet music, you might experience a bit of a learning curve in your first few rehearsals with us. Most of our members learn to sight-sing with their section with accompaniment after not very long. I will often ask the group to sight sing sections, then go back and really teach the tricky parts. I would say that a minority of our members are confident sight-singers.

  • What do I need to prepare for my audition? Should I be nervous?

    Auditions are quick!

Please prepare a verse and chorus of one of our tunes. The selection will be emailed to you with your audition confirmation.

You will sing either a capella or backed up by a guitar. I might spontaneously harmonize with you to see how well you can stick to your part ;)

I will do some range exercises to determine where your voice will fit in our group (this may be very different than what you’ve been told in other choirs - our harmonies are much closer and overlapping than traditional choral music)

Finally, I might ask you to sing “Happy Birthday” as this is a much trickier tune to sing than you’d think! Practice that octave leap, buddies!

If you can carry a tune pretty well, you are likely to be accepted.
